The Cask Experiment series is Mosgaard's experimental series where we work with different ways of making whisky that are not quite traditional - and that certainly applies to this release as well.
CES#4 is a smoked whisky aged first at ex. Bourbon and then a Manzanilla sherry hogshead. The presumption in Ex. Bourbon casks gives a lovely vanilla and almond sweetness, which is the basis before the second aging at Manzanilla.
Manzanilla is a dry sherry like a "Fino" but aged on the Atlantic coast, more specifically Sanlúcar de Barrameda. The salty sea air leaves its clear mark on the sherry, which has a characteristic saltiness on top of notes such as green apples and nuts.
The finished result is a delicious balance with deep flavor notes of plums towards the prune-like, but also lighter fruits such as peaches, pear, lime and finally strawberries. Classic sherry character with flavors of nuts, dark chocolate and bitter marzipan mixed with the feeling of fresh wood shavings. And finally, the salty sensation that brings to mind both seaweed and dried ham.
In addition to the fact that we ourselves are very excited about this characterful and special whisky, we are incredibly proud that in March it won gold at the World Whiskies Award and was named the best Danish single cask in 2024!
440 bottles are bottled, all of which are numbered. The whisky is delivered in a beautiful hand-built box from Brunshaab cardboard factory, where the old craft of making boxes is kept alive. At the cardboard factory, all processes take place, from recycling cardboard and paper that is made into new material, from which the finished box is hand-built, a proud tradition that we are happy to be able to use again at CES #4.
